Belmont

Once somewhat isolated from Gastonia and Charlotte because of the necessity to ford rivers to gain access to them, Belmont was made more convenient by the development of a railroad in 1871. Soon after that addition, a large plot of land was donated to Benedictine months with the purpose of building the college Belmont Abbey. As the railroad and the textile industry became important to the residents of the area who once relied only on agriculture Belmont began to construct itself into the lovely town that it is today. Belmont's style can still be identified by its root in the textile industry as a result of its mill town set up and community based programs. Belmont has experienced the addition of high-end, lake front properties on Lake Wylie, but continues to be a mainly single family-home residential area with a strong character and sense of community. Downtown Belmont hosts many family friendly events during holiday seasons throughout the year, but perhaps the most notable is Friday Night Live, Which takes place every Friday night from May to August. For This, The whole town closes down Main Street, and live music, dancing, vendors and lawn chairs cover the street. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont was named a top 10 Garden to Visit in the Fall by USA Today.
